Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge

Day 2 (cont.)

Jackpot!  As Mom and I drove south to pick up Kim at the El Paso airport, which made an impromptu stop at Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge near the town of Truth or Consequences, NM.  We pulled over with the hopes of seeing a few birds.  'A few' ended up being the understatement of the year -- we saw a GAZILLION sandhill cranes and snow geese.  It was fantastic.

I'd seen sandhill cranes before, but only in pairs.  Here at Bosque del Apache, gigantic flocks congregate for the winter.  It's hard to explain the site and sound of a hundred cranes flying overhead and landing in a field in front of you.  We also saw roadrunners, quail, snow geese, and tons of waterbirds.  Even if you're not a shameless bird nerd, this place is definitely worth a stop.
